The Institute

  Formation of The Institute

A major industrial development and growth process started in India during the fifties soon after Independence. Substantial Investments were made to create the infrastructure and foundation for a manufacturing base of different kind of industries towards the growth of the Country. Trained technical personnel with expert knowledge to keep pace with the developments within India & abroad were an essential requirement for rapid Industrial growth with self - reliance. In order to foster development of the welding profession in India, the members of the erstwhile Indian Chapter of British Institute of Welding – London took the initiative to form The Indian Institute of Welding, which was incorporated on the 22nd April 1966 at Calcutta.

The Institute was promoted by Industries engaged in the fabrication of critical plant & equipment, pipeline, structures for factories, mining, ship building, power - plants, railways etc. Industries engaged in providing Welding Consumables and Equipment for Oil, Steel, Cement, Petro - Chemical, Fertiliser and many other sectors are fully involved. Experts from Research and Development Organisations, IITs, Engg. Institutions & Laboratories doing basic research and application development work for critical welding, with faculties from Universities / IIT’s engaged in Welding related Science and Technology are also actively involved with the Institute.

  Mission

To be the premier Institute in India in the profession of  welding and related activities. The Institute will provide a common platform to scientists, educationists, researchers, manufacturers, fabricators, engineers, welders and students for advancement of welding science and technology in India.

  Objectives

Keeping the original purpose for forming the Institute in a rapidly advancing and developing scenario of  Welding Technology, the following broad objectives were adopted.

  • To promote the advancement of Science & Technology of Welding and its allied subjects by organising seminars, workshops, conferences, refresher courses, technical lectures by eminent personalities on welding related subjects at different places in the country through all 11 Branches, spread all over India

  • To provide technical guidance and consultation to the Industries and Educational Institutions etc

  • To provide technical information on Welding Research & Education

  • To conduct Associate Membership Examinations equivalent to an Engineering Degree, which has been duly approved by HRD Ministry of Govt. of India to offer an educational programme. The objective of this programme is to provide a continuing educational facilities for working professionals to enhance their qualification for better opportunities, who otherwise could not comlpete their education to obtain an engineering degree, at lower cost
