Best Welder & Best Welding Engineer Awards (Three Nos.)

During the International Welding Congress 2008 (IIW-IC-2008) two awards for the Best Welder and Best Welding Engineer have been instituted. From NWS 2008-09, the Best Welder Award has been divided into two categories viz. Best Welder (Pipe) and Best Welder (Structurals). Mr. N. Kalyan, a veteran member of our Institute, Managing Director of M/s. ELCA Laboratories is the Sponsorer of the award.
 
    Eligibility  Criteria for the Best Welding Engineer
  • The minimum qualifications for the candidates for the Best Welding Engineers are :
    • B.Sc with min. 10 years’ experience in welding technology or
    • Diploma with  min. 5 years’ experience in welding technology or
    • Graduate Engineers with min.2 years’ experience  in welding technology
  • Must be capable of reading engineering drawing / blue  print
  • Must have basic knowledge in  science and  art of welding of different materials
  • Must have knowledge in Inspection, QA & QC, costing & Safety  in  welding technology
    Test Procedure for the Best Welding Engineer
Three hour’s written test of 100 marks followed by viva voce test for 50 marks.
 
Eligibility  Criteria for the Best Welders
  • Must be able to read and write in English and / or any Indian Language
  • Must have min.5 years’ experience in practical welding
  • Must have basic theoretical knowledge of welding
  • Must have basic knowledge of welding of different materials, used in the Industries
    Test Procedure for the Best Welder (Pipe)
Only one pre–prepared test coupon shall be given to each competitor.

The  Best Pipe Welders' tests shall be conducted on joining of two pieces of 150    mm dia. Sch  80 pipes in  6G position with 2.5mm root gap, 2.5mm root face, 60-65    degree angle by  SMAW process. E6010 electrodes (2.5 mm dia.) will be used for    root and E 7018 (3.15mm dia.) electrodes for  subsequent passes. Grinding will not be allowed in root / and subsequent passes. Maximum  time  for completion of welding the test piece allowed shall be three hours.

The test weld joints shall be subjected to visual and radiographic tests for evaluation.
 
Test Procedure for the Best Welder (Structural)
Only one pre–prepared test coupon shall be given to each competitor.
The  Best Structural Welders' tests shall be conducted on joining of two pieces of 10/12 mm thick MS plates of size 100 X 300  mm each. The included angle shall be 60 deg. with 1-2mm root face & 1-2 mm root gap and welding shall be carried out in 4G position without backing by SMAW process. E6010 electrodes (2.5 / 3.15 mm dia.) will be used for root and E 7018 (3.15 / 4.0 mm ) electrodes  for  subsequent passes. Grinding will not be allowed in root / and subsequent passes. Maximum  time  for completion of welding the test piece allowed shall be three hours. The test weld joints shall be subjected to visual and radiographic tests for evaluation.
 
Award:
  • The winner of the Best Welding Engineer Award will receive a cash prize of Rs.7,000.00 along with the Certificate
  • The winner of the Best Welder Awards for both Pipes & Structurals will receive a cash prize of Rs.5,000.00 each along with the Certificate
