International Institute Welding Awards
Nominations for Awards of International Institute of Welding from Council Members, Branches of Indian Institute of Welding
 
Dear Members,
As many of you may be aware, the International Institute of Welding (IIW) has instituted many awards for individuals for their contributions to welding allied fields of science and technology. As a member society of IIW, the Indian Institute of Welding (IIW-India) can nominate its members for these awards. IIW has called for the nominations of these awards for the year 2010 and the last date for IIW-India to send its nomination for these awards is November 30, 2009. These awards will be given away in the Annual Meeting of IIW to be held in July 2010 at Ukaraine. The technical committee of IIW-India has been given the responsibility of receiving nominations for these awards from various branches and council members of the Institute and recommend suitable candidate(s) to the council for forwarding to IIW. This is a great opportunity for the members of the IIW-India to receive International recognition for their contribution to welding and allied fields. The last date for the technical committee of IIW- India to receive nominations for these awards is set as September 30, 2009. The nominations received by the Technical Committee will be reviewed by a panel of experts and suitable candidates will be recommended to the IIW-India council for its approval and forwarding the nominations to IIW.  A brief description of the awards is given below. Further information can be obtained from the relevant IIW document that is referred against each award. IIW-INDIA Head office can provide more information for those who are interested.

The Yoshiaki Arata Award (IIW RD511 dt. 21/04/2009 Rev 4-1/1)
The Yoshiaki Arata Award is presented annually to an individuals who has realized extraordianary achievements in fundamental research in welding science and technology and its allied fields which have been recognized as significant contributions to the progress of welding engineering and related fields. A summary of the achievements of the candidate in fundamental research and a list of published documents shall accompany the nomination.
 
The Henry Granjon Prize (IIW RD513 dt. 21/04/2009 Rev 6-1/1)

The Henry Granjon Prize Competition is an annual international competition among authors of papers devoted to research into welding technology or a related subject. The purpose of this competition is to simulated interest in welding and allied processes among young people. To be eligible for the competition, papers (theses, research reports, state of the art surveys etc) shall be authored by one person only and based on recent work carried out at a University or similar educational institution or in industry. Separate prizes are given in the following four categories.
Category A: Joining and Fabrication Technology
Category B:  Materials Behaviour and Weldability
Category C:  Design and Structural Integrity
Category D:  Human related Subjects

The nomination can be for a Masters or Doctoral Degree project or an industrial project at an equivalent technical level. IIW-India can send one nomination each in each category. The nomination shall accompany a copy of the complete manuscript and a condensed version of 10 pages in English.

 

The Evgeny Paton Prize (IIW RD518 dt. 28/4/2009 Rev 4-1/1)
The Evgeny Paton Prize shall be awarded to an individual who has made a significant contribution to science and technology through his/her lifetime dedication to applied research and development in the field of advanced technologies, materials and equipment for welding and allied processes.

 
Specifically, the Prize shall be awarded in one of two possible categories:

Odd years - Category (A): For applied research and development which have been successfully utilized in different industries and new spheres of human endeavours,

Even years - Category (B): For the development of new industrial equipment, materials and structures using welding and allied processes, which have been successfully implemented by industry.
As the nomination invited is for the year 2010, category (B) is applicable

The Thomas Medal (IIW RD516 dt. 23/04/2009 Rev4-1/1)
The Thomas Medal is awarded to an individual who has been involved in IIW/ISO international standards activities.

  • The candidate should demonstrate a degree of personal involvement in IIW work and has contributed to international standardization in the field of welding.
  • The candidate should be recognized by his/her peers as having actively promoted international standardization over a period of time (A period of 10 years would normally be considered the minimum).
  • The candidate should be willing and able to deliver a lecture which exemplifies global studies leading to standardization of welding technology, or one that makes a significant case for international standardization.
  • The candidate should be considered an eminent person in international standardization.
  • The candidate should exhibit leadership in international standardization work by demonstrating the ability to influence and promote consensus in standards development.

The Andre Leroy Prize (IIW RD515 dt. 23/04/2009  Rev3-1/1)
The Competition is open to large-circulation multimedia documents (including videos and computer programs) intended for use in Education and Training, in any aspect of welding and allied processes, at any level.

Multimedia documents produced by commercial firms may be entered for the Competition, provided that they have  been made for the purpose of Education and Training and are not focused solely on the promotion of a particular piece of equipment or consumable.

To be eligible for the Competition, the documents shall have been presented in the public domain during the four years prior to the date on which the Panel of Judges convenes.
