Rebuilding of Indian Industry was visualised soon after independence through the Five Year Plans, in which infrastructure development and core industrial growth with self - dependence was the main aim. Core industries such as Coal, Steel, Power, Fertiliser, Mining, Transportation, Railways, Oil & Gas, Cement, Capital Equipment, Petro - Chemical, Defence, Heavy Engineering along with the supporting ancillary small and medium scale industries began to adopt modern welding technology.
In order to foster the development of welding technology and welding professionals, The Indian Institute of Welding was established in 1966. It is now a premier professional Institute and the only Indian member of The International Institute of Welding.
It has over 4000 individual & 300 industrial corporate members in India and overseas, and has 11 branches situated at Bangalore, Baroda, Bhilai, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Jamshedpur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Tiruchirapalli and Vishakhapattanam.
IIW promotes advancement of welding science and technology by organizing seminars, workshops, conferences, refresher courses and exhibitions in different parts of the country. IIW also provides technical guidance and consultations to the industry and other educational institutions, publishes technical journals, periodicals and booklets on welding and related subjects, and provides data - based information on welding research and development.
The Associate Membership examination, conducted by the Institute is recognized by the HRD Ministry, Govt. of India to be equivalent to an engineering degree. The International Institute of Welding has accorded this institute the status of an Authorised National Body for training and certification of welding professionals.
